David and Jennie Austen organised the 2004 conference, held at Barnsdale Hall Hotel and Country Club, near Oakham. The hotel is in a superb setting, overlooking Rutland Water, which is the largest man-made lake in Europe.
We had a private tour of nearby Burghley House on Saturday evening, followed by dinner in the Orangery. Members took advantage of the free time on Saturday afternoon to visit Oakham and Stamford, as well as the famous Barnsdale Gardens created by the late Geoff Hamilton. Others found the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton not far away.
