The Royal Horseguards Hotel, London
The 2005 UK conference was held at One Whitehall Place, with accommodation at The Royal Horseguards Hotel next door.
One Whitehall Place is an amazing Victorian building, originally designed as the headquarters of the National Liberal Club who still occupy part of the building. It boasts the largest cantilevered marble staircase in Europe!
The weekend started on Friday evening with a champagne reception at the College of Optometrists, just a short walk from the hotel. We were treated to a private tour of the BOA museum, expertly guided by the curator, Neil Handley, who pointed out many of the exhibits of particular interest.
After the lecture session on Saturday morning, the afternoon was free to enjoy London. We re-assembled in the early evening for the inevitable “flight” on the London Eye, in two reserved capsules with guides to point out the many famous places visible.
We were then met by the “William B”, a boat which took us on a cruise as far as Chelsea upstream and past Tower Bridge downstream, whilst we dined and danced the evening away. We even had the sight of Tower Bridge opening as we passed underneath, not once but twice!
As usual, Sunday morning saw further lectures, followed by the AGM, before we went our separate ways again.
The 2005 conference was arranged by Linda Penny and Mark Esbester.
