2008 Conference - Lichfield

The George Hotel, Lichfield

AIO - 2008 Conference - LichfieldPeter & Jennie Mincher-Lockett arranged the 2008 conference in Lichfield. The HQ hotel was The George Hotel, which dates back to the early 18th century. Lectures and meals were held in the Garrick room and the venue proved ideal for our conference. The Hotel is within easy walking distance of the various attractions in the city, which has a compact historic central area. The conference opened with a reception and dinner in the Garrick room, followed by a talk on “Lichfield, its history, ghosts and other gruesome tales” by one of the city’s tourist guides.

After registration and a welcome to the conference from Chairman Linda Penny on Saturday morning, the lecture programme was under way - see details below.

These took us through until lunch, after which members went on a guided walking tour of Lichfield, which tied in with the Friday evening talk.

Following the walk there was some free time to explore the Cathedral (top photo), or visit one of the other places of interest - perhaps Samuel Johnson’s birthplace, or the home of Erasmus Darwin, doctor, scientist and inventor & grandfather of Charles.

Others took the opportunity for a little “Retail Therapy” in the city - and were amused by a sign in a green-fronted Optician’s window asking for people to come in to help them meet their monthly target!!!

AIO - 2008 Conference - LichfieldSaturday evening saw us on our way to Shugborough (photo right), the home of the late Lord Lichfield and the Anson family. Two coaches were used as transport, and unfortunately one member was thought by those in one coach to be in the other, and vice versa! After a short guided tour a formal dinner was followed by a rather less formal Victorian Music Hall entertainment.

Sunday morning saw us up bright and early for three more lectures, followed by the Association AGM. After lunch in the hotel restaurant members said their goodbyes and went their separate ways - until the next time.
