AIO Conferences The Association holds a UK conference annually, usually in October. There have also been a number of Overseas conferences, at approximately two-yearly intervals. The conferences are an opportunity to hear some nationally-renowned speakers, keep up to date with clinical, dispensing, managerial and marketing subjects - including how to compete in the modern optical world - and earn some CET points. Conferences also give AIO members an opportunity to get together in a relaxed environment and discuss matters of common interest. In addition to the lectures, there is usually a less formal social programme, the nature of which will depend on the locality in which the conference is being held. Overseas conferences provide an opportunity to experience optics and the local culture of other parts of the world whilst supporting the provision of local eye care services with financial and practical aid where appropriate. The first overseas conference in 1987 was to Thailand and AIO have returned there in 2011. In between, many trips have taken delegates round the world with recent trips to Greece, Fiji, Eire and Mauritius enabling members to experience a very different “tourist” perspective.
